WRITE YOUR NOTES BY HAND
You may be tempted to take lecture and reading notes on a laptop or tablet. In fact, your teacher may encourage or even require it. However, your brain will be able to retain and retrieve the information far more easily if you put the ideas down in your own words and write them on paper by hand. You can later also add them to a technical document for added review, but seeing your own handwriting while studying will make remembering come test time easier. Try it!
BE ACCOUNTABLE TO SOMEONE ELSE
When you set your study schedule of what you hope to accomplish and by when, share that information with a trusted someone to whom you will be accountable. Make sure they hold you responsible for what you did and did not complete on time. Be sure to decide on consequences for both, such as a treat for completion and not allowing yourself to attend a specific activity until you have finished, PRIOR to each day or week's schedule. By having to own up to another person, you are more likely to stick with the schedule and not allow yourself to put off your goals until a later date.
SET A SCHEDULE FOR THE SUMMER
Each week during the summer, set up a schedule so that you have a designated time each day to study. The summer can be a difficult time for productivity because it is so easy to have the "I have plenty of time to do this later" attitude. Each day after you accomplish your study goals, check them off of your to-do list. Savor the feeling!
STUDY IN SMALLER SESSIONS
Your brain will remember best what you study at the beginning and end of a study session, so do not try to go on marathon cram sessions without taking breaks every 45 minutes or so. Get up, move around, drink water, and stretch. Allow your brain a few minutes to recharge periodically and then return to the material.
READ, READ, READ!!
The more you can read material you enjoy, the better your reading comprehension and speed will be on test day. Shakespeare is not necessary. Whether on screen or paperback, magazines, online articles, romance novels, sci-fi or the latest craze that everyone is talking about all count when it comes to building your reading strength. Read everything you can get your eyeballs on every day. When you enjoy what you are reading, you will be more likely to continue and see those test scores rise.
