Are you a Senior?

Your to-do list:
1. Towards the end of Junior year, ask three or four teachers who know you well from your high school career to write your Letters of Recommendation.

2. Before school is out for Junior year (or as early in the summer as possible if you are reading this too late), give each teacher who agreed to write a letter of recommendation for you a copy of your resume, your transcript, the schools to which you will be applying and why you have chosen them, a list of your strengths, your intended major and career plan, and a few short writing samples.  Offer to send them any additional information they desire including the application essays.  Periodically throughout the summer, check in with your teachers to ask about their progress and whether or not they need anything from you.

3. Be sure to end Junior year with the highest grades possible.  Remember, this is the last semester of grades colleges will see before you apply in the Fall.

4. Take the June ACT and SAT!  Taking the exams whenever they are offered allows you to take full advantage of those universities that offer the "Super Score".

****REMEMBER, colleges and universities often offer scholarship rewards for higher test scores.  Tutoring to earn the best score possible is an INVESTMENT in your professional and financial future.

5. During the summer between Junior and Senior year, perfect your ACT and SAT strategies and content to ensure your Fall exam scores are at their peak.

6. Research universities online and contact those in which you might be interested.  Let them find out who you are and that you are interested in possibly attending.  Do this by asking questions and requesting more information.

7. Visit potential colleges to see if you would consider applying there.  Build relationships with admissions counselors and those in the departments from the majors you are considering.

8. BEGIN YOUR APPLICATION ESSAYS AND PERSONAL STATEMENTS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SUMMER.  THEY WILL TAKE MORE THOUGHT AND TIME THAN YOU ARE ANTICIPATING.  We help you use your voice to make your essays truly SHOW your readers in a unique way who you are and why you belong at that school.  Standing out among the other strong applicants will help guarantee your offer for admission.
DO NOT sound like everybody else who is applying to your dream school.
DO NOT rattle off your list of achievements and activities.
DO NOT bore your readers to tears.
BE DIFFERENT.
BE INTERESTING.
BE YOURSELF.

Helping students find their voices when writing application essays is our favorite part of tutoring.  We love the masterpieces we help our students create.  Let us work with you to get past the "awkward bragging about yourself" stage or the feeling "stuck with no idea where to start" stage.

9. Take challenging courses during your senior and be sure to do well.

10. Combat "senioritis" by staying motivated.  Do your best in all of your classes.  Remember, colleges are able to revoke their offers for admission if a student does not maintain the same level of performance through high school graduation.

11. We at Kugler Counseling & Tutoring Services can help with every step along the way.  We even offer our unique Online Webcam lessons so, no matter where you are in the country, we can be there with you along your academic journey.  Technology is a wonderful thing!
